Wagoner finds his way back to Victory Lane for first time in 2015 at Hamilton County Speedway

WEBSTER CITY – With the racing season already at the midpoint, only one new face appeared in Victory Lane Saturday evening at the Hamilton County Speedway.

Veteran driver Jason Wagoner of Iowa Falls fended off several contenders during the 18-lap Stock Car feature to claim his first victory at the track this year. Starting from the outside pole, he kept his No. 20 ride at the front through three caution restarts, including a green-white-checkers finish.

Fort Dodge driver Lance Deal came from the 10th spot to secure second, while John Campbell of Belmond came up to take third form his fourth-row starting position.

Campbell leads Travis Prochaska of Iowa Falls by 11 points in the quest for the track championship. Jim Mitchell of Webster City is third, 17 points back.

Young Des Moines driver Nick Roberts held off strong competition form the No. 47 of Greg Elliott of Webster City and the No. 26J of Joel Rust, Grundy Center, to take the final flag for his second Modified feature win of the season.

Running on the low side, Roberts and Elliott, who took the top lane, dueled door-to-door over the final few laps. Rust came across the line in third.

Elliott sits at the top of the class, ahead of Rust and Roberts by 20 points.

Nationally-ranked Story City Late Model driver Jeremy Grady came from the third row to take the lead midway through the feature race. He gained ground with each lap and claimed the checkers for the second time in 2015.

The caution-free race saw Webster City drivers Ryan Griffith and Jason Hahne work from the back of the pack to place second and third, respectively.

Ryan Griffith is the Late Model season leader with 237 points. Darrell DeFrance (225) currently sits in second while Paul Nagle (221) is third.

Jared VanDeest, a Sport Mod driver out of Holland, found his way back to the winner’s circle for the second time in as many weeks. He wrestled control of the race from Rocky Caudle of Ellsworth on the ninth lap and kept the lead for the win. Caudle finished second with Webster City’s Ty Griffith in third.

VanDeest, the 2014 Sport Mod track champion, trails Ty Griffith by seven points on the season. Caudle is currently third.

It only took Fort Dodge racer Myles Michehl six laps to move from 10th to first in the Hobby Stock feature event. The class raced tight the entire race with Michehl scoring the win over Randy Embrey of Granger.

Third-place went to Doug McCollough of Webster City.

Michehl enters this week’s races as the Hobby Stock season leader with 224 points, 15 in front of Matt Mundt and Craig Graham.

Also claiming his second successive checkers was John Gill of Marshalltown in the Sport Compact class. Crossing the finish in a close second was Danny Sassman, Jr., of Fort Dodge with Nick Hogan, Manson, in third.

The win moved Gill to just one point behind Hogan on the points leaderboard.

Fan appreciation night is set for Saturday with grandstand admission set at $5. A fireworks display will follow the feature races.

The grandstand will open at 5:30 p.m. Hot laps will begin at 6:30, with heat and feature races to follow.
