Recent success works against WCHS baseball

WEBSTER CITY – It’s said that winning cures all, but it can also mask a lot of vulnerabilities.

That’s why Webster City baseball coach Mark Fisher is always teaching. Regardless of the outcome, there are always lessons to learn.

With a recent string of successes in its back pocket, WCHS took a small step backwards Wednesday night at Lynx Field, as North Central Conference rival Fort Dodge St. Edmond handed Fisher’s club its fourth shutout loss of the season, 4-0.

It wasn’t as glaring as the 16-1, 3-inning thumping the Gaels gave the Lynx earlier this month, but Fisher hopes his players take something away from it anyway.

“This was inevitably going to happen and was going to be a part of the process we have been preaching,” Fisher said. “We were flat all night in pretty much all areas of the game. We played very much like just showing up and remembering to bring our glove was enough to get the win. That’s the lesson we had to learn.”

Fisher says it was a good reminder for him as well.

“That’s not to put the blame on the kids,” he said. “As a veteran coach, I need to do a better job of keeping them from getting comfortable like that where they think they can just show up.”

St.Edmond (11-9, 5-4 NCC) received a standout effort form Reid Johnson on the mound. He went the distance, scattering just five hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts.

Lynx lead-off hitter Romel Martinez connected for a pair of singles. Cal Zahn, Max Hackbarth and Dylan Steen all smacked base hits.

St. Edmond scored single runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings off Steen and reliever Cole Reigelsberger. Robert Flatter, Logan Fehr and Jason Setterdahl drove in runs.

Steen was sharp in his six innings on the bump. He allowed seven hits and three walks to go along with seven strikeouts.

Reigelsberger fanned one when he took over in the seventh.

WCHS entered the game with wins in five of its previous six outings.

The Lynx non-conference date with Northeast Hamilton, scheduled for Thursday, was cancelled due to an Iowa Star Conference make-up game for the Trojans. WCHS will return to the diamond on Monday at Algona.
