PICKED OFF

WEBSTER CITY – Cole Reed is going to haunt the dreams of quarterback Ben Jass and, really, every member of the Midwest Rampage for quite a while.

Reed is the main reason why the Rampage now has a blemish on its 2015 record. Reed is the main reason why Webster City’s minor league football franchise had to say goodbye to its nine-game home win streak.

Reed returned three interceptions for touchdowns in the second and third quarters to crush the spirits of the Rampage, as he led his Southwest Huskerz to a convincing 34-16 victory.

The Huskerz (5-0) took sole possession of the Southern Plains Football League lead, while the Rampage (4-1) slipped back into a two-way tie for second with the South Central Hawgs (4-1).

Reed’s first pick-six covered 58 yards and came with just five seconds remaining in the first half and followed a 14-yard touchdown pass form Jordan Larson to Ricky Gutierrez just 15 seconds earlier. The two end zone trips turned a 7-0 margin into a 20-0 lead at the intermission.

The late-half collapse started when the Rampage was stopped on fourth-and-inches from its own 45, and three plays later Gutierrez was celebrating.

Demetrius Washington got the ball rolling for the Huskerz on the first drive of the game. His 2-yard touchdown run was the first ground score given up by the Rampage this season.

“The Huskerz came ready to play … (they) virtually shut us down in the first half,” Rampage head coach Matt Girdley said. “If I had to do it over again I would have punted it when it was fourth-and-inches.”

Jass, the Rampage veteran signal caller, was intercepted by Reed again just 15 seconds into the third quarter, and this time it was returned 45 yards to the house.

Reed scored for a third time on a 50-yard return later in the third to put the Huskerz ahead 34-2 entering the final period.

Jass completed 12 of 20 passes for 181 yards and two TDs, but he was intercepted five times. The Rampage had no running game, as primary ball carrier Ross Haren gained just 16 yards on 17 carries.

Gunnar Wyatt snared a pair of touchdown passes from Jass – they covered 35 and 15 yards – in the fourth quarter. Wyatt caught eight balls for 122 yards on the day.

The Rampage defense limited the Huskerz to just 97 yards of total offense, but veteran linebacker John Elkin says the unit could have, and should have, been better.

“We win and lose as a team, and while the defense shut down their offense, especially their run game, we didn’t do enough to help out our offense,” he said. “The Huskerz didn’t see our best team, but they will the next time we play them.”

Elkin collected a team-high six tackles. Shon Osborn notched five, while Nick Plueger and Tanner Day were both in on four stops.

The Rampage will need to regroup quickly as it gets set to host the Hawgs on Saturday at Northeast Hamilton High School in Blairsburg. The No. 2 seed in the playoffs will be on the line when the ball is kicked off at 4 p.m.
