No. 5 Greene County fends off Hawks in HOIC play

JEFFERSON – Fifth-ranked (Class 3A) and Heart of Iowa Conference favorite Greene County scored single runs in four of the seven innings and then rode the strong pitching performance of all-state hurler Marissa Promes to a 4-1 victory over South Hamilton here Monday night.

A double and solo home run by Kayla Mobley helped too, as the Rams (7-0, 4-0 HOIC) stayed perfect on the season. South Hamilton (1-2, 1-2 HOIC) dipped below .500, but head coach Laura Read wasn’t displeased with her team’s performance.

“I thought we came out with a stronger mentality than we did against PCM last week,” she said. “We got out of a couple of bases loaded jams with gooddefense, but we just couldn’t get the hits to fall.”

Promes, the leader of last season’s run to a third-place finish at the state tournament for the Rams, limited the Hawks to five singles and whiffed 10.

Kayla Lucas, Tiffany Jacobson, Leandra Diersen, Kayla Carlson and Alissa Moss all notched hits for the Hawks. Carlson plated the team’s only run in the seventh frame.

Emma Saddoris found the gap for a triple for Greene County.

Leandra Diersen suffered the loss in the pitcher’s circle. The sophomore allowed 11 hits and three earned runs. She struck out two and walked one.

South Hamilton will return home this evening to face Gilbert at 7 p.m.
