Nerland’s HR assault continues in Lynx win

HAMPTON – As long as pitchers continue to challenge Webster City freshman slugger Cassidy Nerland, she’ll continue to blast the softball into orbit.

It’s worked pretty well so far for her this summer.

Nerland cranked her fourth home run in the last eight games – her seventh of the season – on Monday, as she powered Webster City to a convincing 6-1 victory over North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont.

Nerland finished 2-for-4 at the dish with three RBI. She hammered a single in the first inning to drive in a run and then took a Morgan Miller offering deep over the fence in center field for a two-run shot in the third inning.

“She’s consistent at the plate,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said of Nerland, “and that’s what we need out of everybody. The girls did a good job of coming to the plate and staying aggressive.”

Nerland sits tied for 13th in the state, regardless of class, in dingers. She’s third in Class 4A and needs just four more home runs to tie the single-season school record of 11, set by Kaitlyn Biere in 2013.

WCHS (10-14, 6-3 NCC) piled up 10 hits against the Bulldogs. Courtney Lampman had the only other extra-base hit – a double.

Allie Flaws continued to be the table setter at the top of the order. The speedy junior went 3-for-4, scored a pair of runs and stole three bases.

“She’s doing a good job of getting on base for us,” Howard said of Flaws. “She utilizes her speed really well … when she gets on she can usually get to second and we can steal third every once in a while.”

Hannah Myers and Taylor Schnathorst both finished 2-for-4 at the dish. Myers drove in a run and scored once.

Junior pitcher Gabbi Hoversten took care of the rest. The right-hander had one of her best outings of the season, as she authored a three-hitter – all singles – and struck out four.

WCHS returns home this evening to take on fourth-ranked (2A) and NCC leader Fort Dodge St. Edmond at 7:15 p.m.
