Lynx struggle at plate, go 1-2 at B-F tourney

BONDURANT – An inconsistent day at the plate pushed Webster City to the backside of the bracket, and the Lynx finished 1-2 at the Bondurant-Farrar Tournament.

Still playing without senior slugger Mikaleh McCoy, who is also the team’s No. 1 pitcher, the Lynx dropped contests to Heart of Iowa Conference schools Prairie City-Monroe and Roland-Story by matching 4-2 scores. Their only win came against Williamsburg, 8-3.

WCHS (5-5) accumulated 18 hits on the day, 17 of them singles.

“We struggled offensively, especially early in the games,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “We should be able to compete a little bit better … we just need to make sure we’re getting quality at bats and we’re being disciplined hitters.”

PCM opened up a 4-0 lead before the Lynx attempted to rally in the latter innings. Courtney Lampman lashed two of the team’s five hits off Mustangs’ pitcher Racheal Freland. Allie Flaws, Hannah Myers and Catie Boyd all singled.

Gabbi Hoversten suffered the loss in the circle. The right-handed hurler struck out two.

A single run in the second inning, followed by a six-run explosion in the third helped WCHS roll past Williamsburg. Myers and Haley Flaws both went 3-for-4 at the dish, and Myers drove in two runs. Maddie Anderson roped a two-run double, and Kenady Highland plated a run with a single.

Erin Bahrenfuss picked up her first career varsity victory on the mound. She allowed just one earned run and fanned one.

Roland-Story touched Hoversten for 11 hits in the Lynx final game of the tournament. WCHS notched just five hits; Myers laced two singles, while Lampman, Highland and Allie Flaws all had one. Highland and Myers both had a RBI.

WCHS will be at home this evening to take on North Central Conference rival Algona at 7:15 p.m.
