Lynx eye-popping offensive show continues Friday, Saturday

WEBSTER CITY – The meat of the Webster City battling order is a headache just waiting to happen for the opposition.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows may have been the first team to feel the wrath, but it certainly won’t be the last.

The trio of Mikaleh McCoy, Cassidy Nerland and Maddie Anderson – the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 hitters in the Lynx lineup – combined to go 7-for-10 with four extra base hits and seven RBI in Webster City’s 11-1, 5-inning thumping of the Cowgirls Friday night at Lynx Field.

Nerland blistered three doubles and plated three runs in the clean-up spot, and Anderson jacked a two-run home run in the first inning to ignite the blowout.

“The placement that they’re in makes it real tough to pitch around one of them,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said of the trio. “All of the girls are really making good decisions. They’re waiting for their pitch and they’re exploding through contact.”

In two league games, Nerland has four extra base hits, including a grand slam, and has driven in seven runs.

Six different players notched at least one hit for the Lynx (2-0, 2-0 NCC). Allie Flaws ripped a RBI double in the second inning, and Taylor Schnathorst and Kenady Highland added singles at the bottom of the order.

WCHS scored in all four of its at bats, keyed by four-run frames in the first and fourth.

Gabbi Hoversten got the start inside the pitcher’s circle and was comfortable throughout. She limited CGD (0-2, 0-2 NCC) to just five hits and its one run was unearned.

Hoversten struck out two.

“Gabbi did a good job,” Howard said. “She hit her spots and stayed really poised throughout the game.”

Lynx 1-2 at tourney

OGDEN – Webster City piled up runs and hits during Saturday’s Ogden tournament, but came home with just one victory in three tries.

The Lynx opened their day by rallying past Carroll, 13-9. They dropped back-to-back games to fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Greene County, 13-12, and Boone, 10-9, to close out the tournament.

“I was really happy with how we played offensively,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “Defensively, if we take out the unearned runs we win (all three) games.”

WCHS (3-2) pounded 40 hits on the day.

Hannah Myers and Cassidy Nerland both had a pair of doubles and they combined for five RBI in the win over Carroll. Nerland also bashed a home run; Allie Flaws plated three runs.

Flaws ripped a triple, while Maddie Anderson collected three RBI against Greene County.

Nerland and Mikaleh McCoy both left the yard against Boone. McCoy, Taylor Schnathorst and Kenady Highland all drove in two runs.
