Hawk girls live, die by long ball against Norse

JEWELL – Roland-Story freshman Sydney Mathis got the better of South Hamilton in the pitcher’s circle and at the plate Monday evening at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

Mathis earned the victory and blasted a pair of solo home runs – the second one the game-winner – to lead the Norse to a 5-4 Heart of Iowa Conference victory in 8 innings.

“It was a great game and a fun game,” South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said. “The difference was they capitalized on opportunities and we didn’t. We left nine runners in scoring position, so it’s a tough pill to swallow.”

South Hamilton (5-4, 2-4 HOIC) out-hit Roland-Story (7-5, 5-3 HOIC) 11-10.

Alyssa Hegland cranked a solo home run in the first inning and Carly Swenson belted another dinger in the fourth for the Hawks.

Ady Wintermote added three hits, including a pair of doubles, Kayla Carlson laced three singles and plated a run, and Alissa Moss added a pair of base knocks.

Kayla Lucas also notched a RBI single.
