Hahne takes the Late Model checkers on home track

WEBSTER CITY – Drivers at the Hamilton County Speedway outraced Mother Nature Saturday night, as track officials hurried to get the race program completed before the rain arrived.

Hobby Stock driver Randy Embrey notched his second victory of the season with a next-to-the-last lap pass over frontrunner Matt Smith of Des Moines. Smith led for most of the race while the four cars right behind swapped spots. He settled for second while Myles Michehl, the winner the previous week, took third.

The Sport Mod guys – and one girl – were just a bit eager to contend for the top prize as there were five caution restarts in the first eight laps.

Jared VanDeest, working his way to the front from the 10th starting spot, took control of the race on the last restart to claim his first win of the season at the historic half-mile dirt track.

Webster City’s Ty Griffith, whose car was damaged in one of the earlier tangle-ups, vaulted all the way from the 11th starting spot to second place. Third place went to fellow Webster City driver Brandon Toftee.

Dows’ driver Matt Ring piloted his Stock Car into the lead at the start of the feature race and led for the first half. He surrendered his spot on a lap No. 8 restart to eventual winner Steve Meyer of Grundy Center.

Week No. 3 feature winner John Campbell of Belmond poked ahead of Meyer for one lap until Meyer powered ahead to cross the stripe with a good lead. Campbell scored second with Ring in third.

The No. 23JR Modified driven by young Des Moines native Nick Roberts opened a large lead at the start and never looked back during that class’s main event, leaving the rest of the field to battle for the remaining spots.

Running side-by-side, the No. 24B of Brandon Brinton, Ames, and the No. 26J of Joel Rust, Grundy Center, scrambled the last half of the race to try to capture second. Rust prevailed, with Brinton in third.

Late Models gunned three wide at the start of the feature, and Jason Hahne of Webster City came up from a fifth-row start position to take the lead on the fourth lap.

A restart with three laps remaining bunched up the cars, but Hahne pulled away to gain his second victory of the season. Darrell DeFrance of Marshalltown stayed with Hahne for the first part of the race and after the restart to secure second. In third was Ryan Griffith of Webster City.

Five of the top seven finishers in this week’s Late Model feature are ranked in the top 10 of IMCA’s national Late Model points list.

Track officials noted the three Des Moines area Late Model drivers involved in the previous week’s pit ruckus were fined for improper behavior by the IMCA sanctioning body.

Second row starter John Gill of Marshalltown claimed his first track victory in the Sport Compact class. Danny Sassman Jr., Fort Dodge, was second, and 2015 points leader Nick Hogan of Manson settled for third.

Vintage race cars were on the track for the second time this season. Josh Zieman of Mason City drove his No. 45 1956 Pontiac to the win. Zieman, the grandson of Central Iowa racing legend Ted Zieman, races the car in honor of Mason City’s Charlie Hart who raced alongside his grandfather. Second went to Ben Holt, another Mason City resident.

Weekly points racing resumes on Saturday with hot laps starting at 6:30 p.m.

Race fans will be treated to midweek racing on Tuesday, June 16, as the topless Modifieds and Sport Mods will take the track. The speedway announced they will start 30 Modifieds in the 50-lap, $2,000 to win race.
