Griffith, Hogan take the checkers again at HCS

WEBSTER CITY – A total of 95 drivers crowded into the pits Saturday evening for the fourth night of regular season racing at the Hamilton County Speedway.

The fast surface allowed drivers to use all the lanes, and four racers gained repeat trips to the winner’s circle.

Ty Griffith of Webster City continued his domination of the Sport Mod class with his fourth victory of the season. He took the lead at the midway point from the No. 99 of Rocky Caudle to visit Victory Lane once again. Taylor Musselman of Norwalk eked out third over Jared VanDeest in the yellow-checkered finish.

It was a drag race to the finish as Fort Dodge driver Jeff Deal and Churdan’s Jason Minnehan dueled for the trophy in the Stock Car feature. The race saw four caution flags as the cars bunched up contesting for spots.

Deal trucked to the finish line first, followed by Minnehan. John Campbell, the Week 3 victor out of Belmond, was third.

Modified driver Adam Larson of Ankeny came from the eighth position to take the lead on a first-lap caution restart. Working all lanes of the track, he took his commanding lead home for the win. Carter VanDenBerg charged from the No. 15 starting spot to collect second. Greg Elliott of Webster City beat out Ricky Stephan of South Sioux City for third.

Myles Michehl, driving out of Fort Dodge, returned to Victory Lane for the second time in 2015 in his No. 21 Hobby Stock. He had to fight for the checkers, as Craig Graham of Webster City put his car beside Michehl for several laps. Michehl powered ahead with three laps to go.

Matt Mundt, Callender, was third while Balke Miller, Des Moines, took fourth.

The lead in the Late Model feature changed hands three times before the No. 99D of Marshalltown veteran Darrel DeFrance gained control following an 11th-lap caution restart. He led the remaining circuits, which included another restart resulting in a green-white checkers finish. In the second slot was Curtis Glover of Des Moines. Local racer Ryan Griffith came from row No. 4 to claim third.

Three Des Moines area Late Model drivers and their crews got into a ruckus after the race with law enforcement called to the scene. No charges were filed.

IMCA, the sanctioning body, will review the incident this week and levy any fines and/or driving suspensions where warranted.

Manson driver Nick Hogan notched his third Sport Compact victory this year on the historic half-mile. Beaman’s David Moorman edged up from the third row to capture a hard-fought second over Adam Gates of Marion.

Track officials announced they will sponsor the Mid-Iowa Topless 50 at the track on Tuesday, June 16. Modifieds and Sport Mods will run with no rooftops, reminiscent of old-style racing.

The Modified race will start 30 cars in the 50-lap feature with $2,000 to win. Sport Mods will run a 35-lap feature for $1,000 to win.

Also running that evening will be Mod Lites, and special admission pricing will be in effect.

Weekly points racing will begin with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Heats and feature races will follow.
