Gilbert sets school record in Lynx season finale

APLINGTON – Tired legs and a relentless opponent spelled a long night on the pitch for the Webster City girls’ soccer team in its season finale here yesterday.

Aplington-Parkersburg owned the net and scored at will en route to a 9-2 victory over the Lynx in a Class 1A Region 4 quarterfinal.

“They had players that showed speed and they passed the ball well,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said of the Falcons. A-P (9-7) led 4-0 at the half and 7-0 before WCHS (8-7) ended the shutout on an unassisted goal by Molly Gilbert in the 51st minute.

Gilbert scored again off a Kennedy Daniels assist in the 75th minute. It was her 27th goal of the season, giving her sole ownership of the single-season school record.

Gilbert’s career total of 42 goals puts her second all-time behind Kelsey Brown, who notched 44 in her career. Baedke said Gilbert could have scored more it she had wanted to.

“She’s not selfish at all,”?Baedke said. “She was willing to try to help other girls get a goal.”

Gilbert found the back of the net in 12 of the Lynx 15 matches. She scored multiple goals in nine bouts, including a pair of three-goal and four-goal performances.

This marks just the second winning season for the Lynx in the program’s history, a feat the girls should be proud of, Baedke said.

“It was a great year,” he said. “A lot of girls stepped in and stepped up.”
