Bulldogs keep Lynx baseball stuck in neutral

WEBSTER CITY – The Webster City baseball team continued to show improvements in all phases of the game, yet still came up empty Monday evening at Lynx Field.

Algona scored two runs in the fourth inning to move ahead for good, and added two more in the sixth and an additional two in the seventh to silence the Lynx, 6-3, in North Central Conference play.

The Bulldogs (6-4, 3-0 NCC) managed just six hits, but three of them went for extra bases – doubles by Quinton Nielsen, Nathan Benson and Justin Wykoff.

WCHS (0-7, 0-3 NCC) collected seven hits – all singles – highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance from senior Cal Zahn.

Lynx head coach Mark Fisher again walked away optimistic, but says his young team has to figure out a way to get over the hump.

“I honestly felt like we were the better team … again, it sounds like a broken record, and we’re not seeing the wins to vindicate this, but we are improving a lot each game,” he said. “This was by far our best game of the season.”

Eighth-grade pitcher Dylan Steen suffered the loss on the mound after a quality 62?3 innings of work that included nine strikeouts. He walked six and allowed only one earned run.

Alex Remy also worked into the seventh and secured the win for Algona.

Max Hackbarth, Collin Oswald and Cole Reigelsberger all went 1-for-3 at the dish for WCHS, and Daniel Halko was 1-for-4. Jordan Moen drove in two runs and Hunter Hayden plated one.

Zahn also stole two bases and scored a run hitting out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

WCHS will be back on its home field this evening for a non-conference contest against Saydel. The first pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m.
