Third-ranked Lynx remain perfect, Fuhs twins go 1-2 at Kuemper

CARROLL – Forty-two teams have now taken a crack and all 42 have left empty-handed.

Beating the third-ranked (Class 3A) Webster City boys’ golf team is obviously easier said than done.

And the scary part for all future opponents? The Lynx (42-0) are only getting better.

Buoyed by the four best scores in the field of 83 golfers, WCHS thumped the field at the Carroll Kuemper Invitational on Saturday. The team’s 18-hole score of 297 was its lowest of the year and 28 shots better than second- and third-place finishers Carroll and previously undefeated Panorama (325).

“We knew going in that the competition would be stiff and that we had to step up on our game a little bit, so we felt good about it,” WCHS head coach Dave Brighton said. “We just wanted to buckle down and play as well as we could.”

Mission accomplished.

Twin brothers Alec and Avery Fuhs went 1-2 with rounds of 73 and 74, respectively, at the par-71 Carroll Country Club. Drew Fielder matched Avery Fuhs’ round, but settled for third on a card back. Sean Vogelbacher’s 76 was the fourth-best score, but he slotted into sixth via the tiebreaker.

Logan Yates (84) and John Ferrell (88) struggled with their swings, but Brighton said their issues were corrected by the end of their rounds.

Alec Fuhs’ round included three birdies, five bogeys and 10 pars. Avery Fuhs put up one birdie, four bogeys and 13 pars.

Fielder had the hottest nine of the day, as he posted a 2-under 32 on the back. But he came in with a 42 on the front.

“Drew played very well on the back,” Brighton said.

Carroll Kuemper (329) and Denison-Schleswig (330) rounded out the top five. A total of 14 squads took part.

The most important week of the season now awaits WCHS. Brighton and his players will head to Algona today for the North Central Conference tournament. On Tuesday the Lynx will host their own invitational at Briggs Woods Golf Course, and on Friday they’ll get the postseason underway at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

“We’re looking at that ultimate prize at the end of the season,” Brighton said. “I didn’t really think we’d go undefeated this long, but that’s just a bonus.”
