Pruismann’s PR in 400 hurdles lands him Class 1A state bid

Kyle Pruismann had never run faster than 59 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles prior to Friday evening’s Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Northwood.

But unique things can often happen when a career is on the line.

Not ready to hang up his spikes just yet, the Northeast Hamilton senior sprinted around the track and leaned across the finish line in 57.32 seconds to win gold and earn the Trojans their only berth in the state meet later this week.

“He was pretty excited and I was pretty excited for him,” NEH head coach Shannon Muhlenbruch said. “He (had a personal record) by two seconds and that’s huge.”

Pruismann will be part of the area contingent that will compete in 14 events when the state meet gets underway from Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Thursday.

South Hamilton will play a role in a pair of 2A events. High jumper Alyssa Hegland earned an at-large bid after placing third at Thursday’s qualifying meet in Story City, but her clearance of 5-2 places her in a tie for sixth heading into state.

The Hawks will be represented by two runners in the boys’ open 800. Caleb Olson (2:03.28) was an automatic qualifier after placing second on Thursday, while Devon Fisher (2:03.69) was an at-large entrant after a third-place finish. They are seeded 14th and 17th, respectively.

The Webster City girls’ team wasn’t able to scoop up any 3A wildcard entries and will go to state with the five bids it earned on Thursday in Gilbert – Cassidy Nerland in the shot put (40-51?2, seeded seventh) and discus (102-10, 24th), Hannah Myers in the high jump (5-0, sixth), Carrie Gerdes in the long jump (16-61?2, sixth) and Allie Flaws in the 100 (13.49, 24th).

The Lynx boys’ squad also moved just its automatic qualifiers onto the big stage. They include Cal Zahn in the high jump (6-2, third) and 100 (11.75, 24th), Payton Kannuan in the long jump (19-101?2, 23rd), Tanner Hoveland in the 110 high hurdles (15.28, seventh), the shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.63, 18th), and the 4×100 (44.14, fourth).

Hoveland, Cody Blair, Jordan Tanner and Fernando Martinez make up the shuttle hurdle group. Zahn, Hoveland, Kannuan and Gavin Dinsdale are on the 4×100.
