LYNX BRING HOME ALL THE NCC HARDWARE

ALGONA – Perhaps the most unassuming player on Webster City’s all-star roster, John Ferrell certainly knows when it’s time to buckle down and play his best golf.

He’s been doing it for three years.

For some reason, the North Central Conference tournament brings out the best in the senior, who notched his third consecutive top-10 finish in the event on Monday at the Algona Country Club, as he was a key player in the third-ranked (Class 3A) Lynx overthrow of longtime league king Clear Lake.

Avery Fuhs wasn’t bad either.

Fuhs won the individual crown and WCHS fired a 322 to claim the team championship and end Clear Lake’s run of four consecutive titles. Humboldt was a close second with a 325, following by the Lions’ 328.

Howling winds that only got worse as the day progressed and bone-chilling temperatures made the 18-hole format as much a mental battle as a physical one for the players. Did WCHS have its best day? No, not even close. But sometimes good enough is just that.

“We’ll take it,” WCHS head coach Dave Brighton said after he watched his squad stay unbeaten on the season. “We knew the weather wasn’t going to be good, and we knew that Humboldt was going to be tough to beat. But we have that confidence to know that if we play well, we should win the meet or tournament.”

Ferrell’s 81 gave him the seventh-place slot, just one place behind teammate Logan Yates (80). Both players struggled at Saturday’s Carroll Kuemper Invitational, but it didn’t take them long to find redemption.

“(Ferrell) and Logan both needed that to give them a boost of confidence,” Brighton said. “John has played very well at the conference meet.”

But no player in the field was as consistent as Avery Fuhs, who shared the mid-round lead following a 38. He went back onto the nine-hole course and posted a 40; his 78 was good enough to hold off Humboldt’s Christian Birdsell and Clear Lake’s Dane Waldron, who both shot 79. Birdsell’s round included a 45 on his first nine, followed by a 34 on the back.

“Avery was just very consistent,” Brighton said. “That’s the good thing about my team … we’re fairly consistent. The guys don’t usually get too far away from their best scores.”

Alec Fuhs closed out the team tally and finished one spot short of the top 10 with an 83.

Sean Vogelbacher (86) and Drew Fielder (89) also finished in the top half of the field for the Lynx.

WCHS closed out its regular season yesterday by hosting its own Lynx Invitational at Briggs Woods Golf Course. The postseason will get underway on Friday, as WCHS will head to Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames for a Class 3A sectional meet.
