LUCKY 13: Lynx come to life in 2nd half, sweep season series from Cadets

WEBSTER CITY – Craig Signorin didn’t sugarcoat things for his players Friday evening at Lynx Field. He told them exactly what he thought.

“I told the guys at halftime that we were lucky to be up,” Signorin said. “The first 25 to 30 minutes (of the match) were embarrassing. We just didn’t come to play.”

The final 40 minutes were different, however, as the 15th-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City boys’ soccer team showed why it’s won 13 matches this season by scoring three more goals to drub Iowa Falls-Alden, 4-0.

“The second half was probably our best half of soccer this year so far,” Signorin said after his squad swept the two-match season series from the Cadets.

It helped to have defensive leader Connor Foster back on the field after a two-week absence with a foot injury. That also allowed Brandon Young to return to a forward position and he responded with a pair of second-half goals – his seventh and eighth of the season.

“It’s just nice because now we can do a couple of different things in back,” Signorin said. “I started (Young) outside and he showed some confidence in warm-ups … his goals were very nice.”

Young’s goals came in the 42nd and 46th minutes off assists from Landon Daniels and Dylan Peck. Daniels padded the advantage to four goals with 1:59 remaining.

IF-A (10-6) had its way in the first half, but was never able to punch one past WCHS goalkeeper Ashton High, who finished with four saves.

After being outplayed for the majority of the opening half, WCHS (13-4) went up for good off a corner kick by Esler Meija that Seth Crouthamel hammered home for his team-high 12th goal.

WCHS will be back at home on Tuesday for a rematch with fourth-ranked (1A) Clear Lake (9-2) at 5:30 p.m. The Lions blanked the Lynx, 2-0, when they met on May 5 in Clear Lake.

The only blemishes on Clear Lake’s resume are a pair of losses to third-ranked (2A) Waverly-Shell Rock, 6-0 and 3-0. The Lions have outscored their nine victims 51-10.

The Lynx will again try to contain Ernie Miszewski, one of the state’s premier forwards who has scored 17 goals this season.
