Hawks live to fight another day, place 3rd at 2A sectional meet

CARROLL – The reigning Class 2A state champions weren’t ready to abdicate their throne Friday afternoon at the par-71 Carroll Country Club.

And so they play on.

The South Hamilton Hawks kept their season alive for at least a few more days, as they finished third at a Class 2A sectional tournament and advanced to districts at Lake Panorama National Golf Course this Friday.

Southeast Valley (315) claimed the sectional title ahead of runner-up and host Carroll Kuemper (320). South Hamilton (353) advanced because Kuemper was playing on its home course.

Hawks’ head coach Mark Ullestad was ecstatic to lengthen the season.

“We thought we could advance if we shot a reasonable number and we did,” he said. “It was nothing spectacular, but we survived and advanced. I’m very happy we’re playing another week and we’ll get anther week of practice.”

South Hamilton senior Sam Waid – a junior varsity player most of the season before recently sliding into the No. 6 spot – played a key role. He posted an 85 to share the top spot on the team with No. 1 player Nathan Sogard.

“Sam played lights out. I’ve never seen him hit the ball like he did (on Friday),” Ullestad said. “Sam is a competitor from other sports and he was ready to go. As raw as his skills are, he was really fun to watch.”

Colton Coy (89) and Jared Ullestad (94) rounded out South Hamilton’s scoring.

Kuemper’s Nate Mertz was the sectional medalist with a 74.
