HAWK DIAMOND BRIEFS

SH SOFTBALL BLANKED: South Hamilton didn’t have any luck against standout pitcher Racheal Freland Wednesday in Monroe, as the Prairie City-Monroe senior twirled a three-hitter to help the Mustangs prevail, 5-0, in the season-opener for both squads.

PCM (1-0, 1-0 HOIC) jumped out quickly with two runs in the first inning and added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth. The Mustangs piled up 11 hits off Hawks’ hurler Ady Wintermote, who allowed three earned runs, walked two and struck out one.

Tiffany Jacobson slapped two base hits for South Hamilton (0-1, 0-1 HOIC). Kayla Carlson added a single.

“We didn’t show as much confidence at the plate as we did throughout the spring,” South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said. “But our offense is going to come around.”

HAWK BASEBALL DOWNED IN 5: Backed by 10 hits, Prairie City-Monroe opened its baseball season with a 10-0 rout in five innings over Heart of Iowa Conference opponent South Hamilton Wednesday night in Prairie City.

The Mustangs (1-0, 1-0 HOIC) scored nine runs in the second and third innings and also took advantage of six Hawk errors.

“We knew they were going to be a pretty good team,” first-year South Hamilton baseball coach Kyle Galetich said. “The kids played hard. We made mistakes, but they’re mistakes that we can correct with some practice.”

Trey Woodall suffered the loss on the bump after working three innings for the Hawks (0-1, 0-1 HOIC). Caleb Olson took over in the fourth.

PCM southpaw Austin Brown gave up just one hit – a second-inning single by Rylan Harris.
