Elliott captures Modified feature at HC Speedway

WEBSTER CITY – Racers set a quick pace and used all of the lanes on the fast track at the Hamilton County Speedway on Saturday, as 86 drivers kept the crowd cheering through side-by-side action that frequently led to lead changes and unexpected endings.

The most dramatic win of the evening came in the Sport Mod feature. The No. 99 car driven by Rocky Caudle of Ellsworth used his pole position to take the lead and hold down the top spot until the final dash for the flag.

As the cars came into turn No. 3 on the last lap, Caudle slid on the topside cushion of the track. The move allowed Webster City’s Ty Griffith, driving the No. 56, to capture the lead from the bottom and take the checkers. Caudle scored second place, while Norwalk’s Taylor Musselman was third.

Sixteen cars lined up for the Rusty Fister Memorial Stock Car feature race. The late racer was honored with a missing man formation during the parade lap.

The hard chargers began the race three wide and ran in packs throughout. Matt Ring, No. 58 of Dows, led the first half of the race until two quick cautions reset the field and allowed eventual winner Jeff Deal, driving the No. 22D, to gain control from his seventh-row start position.

Ring stayed on Deal’s bumper, but could not retake the lead. At the final flag, third was claimed by last week’s winner – Travis Prochaska of Iowa Falls.

Tyler Prochaska, also of Iowa Falls, was the Lap 1 leader in the Modified main event. But six laps later, Webster City driver Mark Elliott, in the No. 12, powered forward from his fourth row start position to stick his nose under Prochaska and begin his quest for first. Prochaska and Elliott put on a driving show for the fans as the two ran side-by-side for at least eight laps.

Elliott had the lead for the final five laps to claim the victory. The No. 2L driven by Ankeny’s Adam Larson squeaked by Prochaska on the last lap to take second.

Veteran Late Model racer Jeremy Grady, No. 43 out of Story City, ended his historic half-mile victory circle drought to close out the evening’s racing card. Starting from the pole, Grady preserved his lead through two yellow flag restarts to gain the win. He was dogged by Webster City’s Ryan Griffith, who finished in the second slot. Taking third was Paul Nagle.

Grady, Nagle, Jason Hahne and Darrel DeFrance are ranked in the top 20 on the IMCA National Late Model points list. Griffith isn’t far behind, but was hindered by mechanical difficulties in his first two races.

Two Fort Dodge area racers took the top spots in the Hobby Stock feature. Winner Myles Michehl used his front row start position to his advantage on his way to the checkers. In the No. 21, Michehl led all 16 laps, which included two caution restarts. Close behind him in second was Kevin Berger of Otho in the No. 27P.

Eight Sport Compacts from all over central Iowa took the track for the 10-lap feature. Fort Dodge driver Tommy Beekman led every lap to garner the win. Beekman was second in points during the 2014 racing season.

Capturing second was Tige Redenius of Cushing, while John Gill of Marshalltown was third.

Six classes will be back on the track Saturday. Hot laps will get the festivities underway at 6:30 p.m.
