High jumper Zahn 12th at Drake Relays

DES MOINES – Webster City senior Cal Zahn had to settle for a 12th-place finish in the boys’ high jump at the Drake Relays yesterday inside Drake Stadium.

The three-time Drake qualifier and 2014 Class 3A state bronze medalist bowed out when the bar reached 6 feet, 5 inches. He owns the WCHS school record of 6-5.5.

“This was a great reward for a senior in his final season,” WCHS head coach Tony Bussan said. “He’s so much more mature as an athlete and he stayed really calm throughout.”

Zahn missed his first attempt of the competition with the bar at 6-1, but sailed over easily on his next attempt. He also cleared 6-3 without an error.

Only six jumpers were able to surpass 6-5. Five moved on after it went to 6-7 and the field was trimmed to three after 6-9. West Burlington Notre Dame’s Jeff Giannettino went on to defend his crown by clearing 7-1.
