Watermelon Day a success

August 2, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

To the Editor:

The Stanhope community hosted the 56th Watermelon Day on a day that was just about picture perfect. Cool temps and a bright sun along with all the smiles just added to the day's celebration.

Although sponsored by the Stanhope Lions, Watermelon Day would not happen without the assistance of the Stanhope Firemen and many local residents who give hours of their time, talents and hard labor to make the day go from dawn to after dusk, without a hitch. Whether you baked a pie, lined the ball diamond, set up rides or the bingo stand, cooked a hotdog, worked a double shift, cooked the famous "lion" burger, or cut up ice cold watermelon, your help was greatly appreciated. The variety of parade floats, kids, businesses, horses, antique vehicles and community rescue squads made the parade a festive one.

We wish to thank the following merchants for their generous donations: Arnold Motor Supply, Black Hills Energy, Casady Bros. Implement, Central Iowa Building Supply, City of Stanhope, Cooperative Telephone Exchange serving Kamrar and Stanhope, First State Bank, Flocky's Tap, Foster Funeral Home, Gerber Auto Care, Katie's Caf, McMurray Hatchery, Mid Iowa Truck Services, Motor Inn of Webster City, NAPA Auto Parts, North Central Turf, Poet Biorefining, Sparky's, Stanhope Locker, Timm's Used Cars & Auto Body, Tolle Automotive Inc., Town & Country Insurance, United Co-op, Webster City Custom Meats, and Webster City RV. Thanks also to Region 2 Chairperson Craig Hughes and two donors who wish to remain anonymous.

How can we ever thank all the planners, workers, ball players and families who brought youngsters to play a game or enjoy a ride or two? It was a delight to see all the smiling faces as a prize was won, their bingo number called or watch folks enjoying the entertainment whether it was cloggers, drummers, belly dancers or a miniature tractor pull.

It was a good time to greet old and new acquaintances or to watch a ball game all in one Community Park. How does a summer celebration get any better than that?

Thank you to all who came and gave us support.
