STORY CITY - A standout performance on the mound from Trenton Sann and an equally strong outing in the field propelled Clarion-Goldfield past South Hamilton, 4-1, in a Class 2A District 4 quarterfinal-round baseball game here Saturday evening.
The Cowboys (14-16) advanced to Tuesday's district semifinal against No. 6-ranked Roland-Story by limiting the Hawks (11-13) to five hits. Sann struck out seven and walked just one, and Clarion-Goldfield committed only one error behind him.
"They played phenomenal baseball (Saturday night)," South Hamilton head coach Bret Bell said of the Cowboys. "I told the kids that if we're going down, we're going to go down playing good baseball and we did that. We have nothing to be ashamed of about this game or the season."
South Hamilton scratched out its lone run in the second, courtesy of a Hunter Griffin RBI. But Sann was in control the rest of the way.
The Cowboys jumped in front, 2-1, in the bottom of the second and tacked on single runs in the third and sixth innings. They collected six hits off Hawks' senior hurler Lane Heinlein, who gave up two earned runs and struck out six in a losing effort.
Trevor Ullestad doubled and scored South Hamilton's run. Heinlein, Justin Shepherd, Lucas Olson and Colton Griffin all singled.
