JEWELL - Twelve days between wins is a long time. Too long, actually, for South Hamilton softball coach Laura Read.
That's why Read was finally able to exhale last night at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex after her Hawks' squad ended a seven-game skid with a 6-3 victory over Roland-Story in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
"It's a relief," Read said. "It's just like I told the girls, you never know when you're going to turn the corner and a lot of people give up before they get there, so this is a big accomplishment for us and hopefully we can turn the corner."
South Hamilton (5-10, 2-6 HOIC) took a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Hawks scored three times in the third on the strength of a double by Kayla Lucas and an RBI single by Alyssa Hegland. Carly Swenson also plated a run.
Roland-Story (6-5, 4-4 HOIC) trimmed the deficit to 4-3 after five at bats, but the Hawks added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Swenson and Kayla Carlson both produced RBIs in the inning.
South Hamilton finished with 10 hits. MacKenzie Busch roped three singles, Hegland had two and Tiffany Jacobson belted a double and drove in a run.
