WCHS puts scare into Humboldt, falls in 8 inn.

Gordon’s command on mound gives Lynx chance to pull off NCC upset

HUMBOLDT - Making his varsity season debut here last night, Webster City sophomore pitcher Cameron Gordon had the Humboldt bats befuddled for seven innings.

But Gordon simply ran out of gas in the eighth.

Locked at 2 after seven frames, Humboldt survived to beat the Lynx, 3-2, on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Jared Hauck in the bottom of the eighth. Gordon allowed two runners to reach base before handing the ball off to reliever Daniel Halko.

Gordon allowed just six hits and two earned runs. He walked four and struck out two.

"Pitching is a lot about getting the other team uncomfortable and (Gordon) had them uncomfortable," WCHS head coach Troy Smock said. "This just felt like good baseball all the way around. We were just playing well."

Humboldt (9-2, 5-2 NCC) received eight solid innings from crafty lefty Chris Witzke. He was even more stingy, surrendering just five hits.

HUMBOLDT 3, WEBSTER CITY 2 (8 INN.)

Monday at Humboldt

Webster City000 002 00-2 5 1

Humboldt010 010 01-3 6 2

Cameron Gordon, Daniel Halko (8) and Nelson Ball. Chris Witzke and Dillon Fevold. W-Witzke. L-Gordon. 3B-WC: Dylan Fielder. RBI-WC: Alex Oswald.

"Unfortunately, Witzke was keeping us even more uncomfortable," Smock said. "He hit his spots and his ball had a lot of movement."

WCHS (2-7, 1-4 NCC) scored both of its runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2. Trey Tesdahl laced a base hit and later scored on a double steal. Alex Oswald perfectly executed a suicide squeeze to bring Ben Mossman racing to the dish for the second run.

Mossman finished with a pair of base knocks and Halko added one. Dylan Fielder smashed the team's only extra-bast hit - a triple.

WCHS will travel to Eagle Grove on Wednesday.
