Bats come to life, Hawks still drop 2 at Urbandale

June 10, 2013
The Daily Freeman Journal

URBANDALE - The South Hamilton softball team continued to search for a sense of consistency here on Friday, as it dropped a pair of games.

The Hawks (4-8), who have lost five straight, fell to host Urbandale, 9-5, and 14th-ranked (Class 4A) Norwalk, 7-1.

On the bright side, the bats came to life; South Hamilton ripped 10 hits against Urbandale and six against Norwalk. Six of the 16 hits went for extra bases.

"It was really nice to see our bats break out a little bit," South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said. "But it's still not consistent enough because we're still leaving a lot of runners in scoring position."

Carly Swenson jacked a solo home run against Urbandale and later added an RBI single. MacKenzie Busch, Ella Jans and Ady Wintermote all laced doubles and drove in one run.

Alyssa Hegland added a pair of singles.

Jans ripped a pair of doubles and Brittany Nicholson had one against Norwalk. Hegland collected two more hits as well.

Nicholson, the ace of the Hawks' pitching staff, was unable to step into the circle against Norwalk because of a continued elbow problem that Read says is quite painful.

"Norwalk hit the ball really hard and with Brittany's elbow being so bad, she couldn't go," Read said. "She's struggling fighting through a lot of pain right now."

Wintermote accepted the loss; Busch saw time in the circle as well.

South Hamilton will face CMB at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex in Jewell this evening at 7:30 p.m.
