A. Merrill Sundberg, 95,

died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Madrid. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Andrew Merrill Sundberg, son of J. Edwin and Kathryn Campbell Sundberg, was born Nov. 4, 1917 at Madrid. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1935 and received a degree from Boone Junior College. He received his mortuary science degree in St. Louis. Merrill returned to Madrid to work in with his father and grandfather at Sundberg Funeral Home. He operated the funeral home until 1979 when he sold his interest in the business to Gary Kirkpatrick.

On Aug. 30, 1940, he married Pauline Lucille Baldwin at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Des Moines. He served as a U.S. Navy corpsman in the South Pacific during World War II.

Merrill was active in his community, serving on the board of directors of the Madrid Home, the board of directors of City State Bank, and a term as the mayor of Madrid. He also served on the Boone County Conservation Board. Merrill was also active in St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid. He served as scoutmaster for Madrid Boy Scout troops.

Merrill and Pauline moved to Webster City in 1994 to be near their children. He was a member of the Diamond K Kiwanis and the Birthday Club.

Merrill raised horses for many years and served as a judge at area horse shows. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed many happy hours on the links at Woodward Golf and Country Club and Briggs Woods Golf Course. His talents in cabinet making and furniture restoration were well known in the Madrid area.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stephen and Bonnie Sundberg, Grinnell; a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Larry Blankenship, Webster City; Six grandchildren, Alice (Wayne) Barrett, Waukee; Peter (Candy) Cartwright, West Des Moines; Matthew Sundberg, Vancouver WA.; Amy (Jeff) Butillo, Dover, DE.; Michael (Kara) Sundberg, Portland, OR; and Daniel Blankenship, Webster City; two step-grandsons, Adam (Eydie) Blankenship and Jonathon Blankenship, all of Cedar Rapids; 11 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Elinor Gilbert of Madrid; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, who died in 2001; a daughter, Sally Sundberg Cartwright and a granddaughter, Sonja Jean Cartwright.
