Main Street residency was a topic on the agenda for the March 11 meeting of the Jewell city council, one that drew a small crowd of interested citizens for the public hearing on the matter.

Councilmen voted on an ordinance stating that residential use cannot be on the first floor, ground floor, or basement level of any structure. The council approved the first reading on a vote of 3-1, with Leo Reiter voting nay and Fred Marcalus abstaining.

The public hearing for the 2013-14 city budget was also held at the meeting. There was no public input. The library will receive $40,000 from the general fund and $8,346 from the special levy. JADE will receive $30,000. The council approved the budget, along with city employee salaries for the fiscal year.
