OPERA Iowa Educational Touring Troupe, a program of Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc. will take to the road for its 2013 tour on Jan. 28, 2013. The group will perform John Davies' The Three Little Pigs,a telling of the classic fairy tale through the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a reduced version for five singers of Gaetano Donizetti's romantic comedy The Elixir of Love.
OPERA Iowa will visit more than 60 schools and communities, giving 80 or more performances for approximately 20,000 school-aged children starting on January 28 and extending through April 12. The school performances are presented in conjunction with interactive and engaging workshops that meet the National Standards for Arts in Education guidelines. The troupe will also give 11 evening concert performances for community audiences in various locations across the state. These performances are open to the public. The OPERA Iowa troupe will perform for students in public and private schools across Iowa. The communities the troupe will visit are Des Moines, Dubuque, Indianola, Urbandale, Cedar Rapids, Marion, Robins, Ottumwa, Pella, Wapello, Bloomfield, Muscatine, Algona, Spencer, Cherokee, Toledo, Waukee, Ames, Stratford, Union, Webster City, Sioux City, West Des Moines, Elk Horn, Manning, Carroll, Oskaloosa, Ankeny, Carlisle, Clarinda, Corning, Clearfield, Mount Vernon, and Keokuk in Iowa and Kansas City and Liberty in Missouri.
For the 27th annual tour, OPERA Iowa will present John Davies' perfect introduction to the music of Mozart, The Three Little Pigs for elementary and middle school performances. This operatic version of the childhood favorite tells the tale of two sassy pigs and their older and wiser sister. The Three Little Pigs lasts 40 minutes.
Donizetti's The Elixir of Love mixes love, jealousy and mysterious libations in a romantic comedy that OPERA Iowa will present for evening concerts. Young Nemorino is in love with the wealthy but fickle Adina. When Sergeant Belcore also sets his sights on Adina, Nemorino turns to visiting "doctor" Dulcamara for an "elixir of love," guaranteed to turn Adina's head and win her heart. Heads turn, but who wins her heart? The Elixir of Love lasts approximately 2 hours with an intermission.
OPERA Iowa is also offering a Masterclass for high school students, in which students can benefit from vocal tips and insights from the OPERA Iowa singers and music coach. All OPERA Iowa performances are sung in English with a piano accompaniment.
OPERA Iowa Educational Touring Troupe members are handpicked from nationwide auditions of more than 800 singers to share their love of opera with audiences of all ages. The talented young performers of the 2013 OPERA Iowa troupe are: bass Brad Baron of Glen Rock, NJ; baritone Greg Jebaily of Florence, SC; tenor Robert Lilly of Houston, TX; soprano Amedee Moore of Dayton, OH; and soprano Andrea Shokery of Gahanna, OH. The music director is Tzu-Hwa Ho of Taiwan and the technical director is Jessica Rechin of Buffalo, NY.
Des Moines Metro Opera, founded in 1973, is an independent, non-profit, professional opera company dedicated to bringing world-class opera productions and vital performing arts education to central Iowa.
