Press gives Trojets the edge against Wolverines

Jeffers and Greenfield produce double-doubles, NEH ends 5-game losing streak

GARWIN - After five straight losses and 34 days since its last successful outing, something had to change for the Northeast Hamilton girls' basketball team.

That change came on defense, and it led to a whole bunch of offense.

Utilizing a recently implemented 2-2-1 full-court press, the Trojets ran Green Mountain Garwin into submission here Friday night, outscoring the Wolverines 22-3 in the fourth quarter to win going away, 59-30, in Iowa Star Conference play.

"We needed this more than anything else, and we decided that we've been playing way too passive, so we put in the press and said this is what we're going to do," NEH head coach Bret Schutt said. "We only spent two days working on it, but it helped us out in the end; it made us more active and we just made them play faster than they wanted."

Four players scored in double figures for the Trojets (3-9, 2-8 ISC), highlighted by a monster night from Jennifer Jeffers. The senior registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds; she also collected four steals.

Molly Greenfield also reached double digits in points (11) and rebounds (12). Sarah Elm dropped in 14 points, and Jenn Willems contributed 10 points, three steals and three assists.
