Reigning NCC queen St. Edmond roughs up Lynx by 27 points

FORT DODGE - The Webster City girls' basketball team discovered first-hand here last night what many of its North Central Conference brethren have already learned: St. Edmond is pretty dang good.

Behind a menacing full-court defense and three players scoring in double figures, the reigning conference champion Gaels sent the Lynx packing by a 71-44 count.

St. Edmond (8-1, 7-1 NCC), which has won five consecutive games since the only blip on its resume, a loss to Hampton-Dumont, jumped ahead by 10 points after one quarter and never relented.

"I can't take anything away from St. Edmond because they've got a good team," WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. "They've got shooters, they've got girls that can handle the ball; but it's like I told the girls after the game, they're doing this to a lot of teams right now."

Alli Huss and Anna Yung both went off for 18 points for the Gaels, and Hannah Lentsch stepped up with 10. Huss and Yung accounted for three of the team's four 3-point field goals.

WCHS (2-6, 2-5 NCC) registered just one double-digit scorer; Emma White continued to develop in the paint with 12 points to go along with a pair of steals. Rachel Kauffman chipped in seven points and Mikala Harrill finished with six.

St. Edmond's suffocating defense translated into myriad of Lynx turnovers early on, and there was nothing Muhlenbruch's team could do to recover.

"They pressed us, and I think we got into a little bit of a rush and we panicked a little bit," Muhlenbruch said.

St. Edmond increased its cushion to 19, 35-16 at the half. The Gaels were up 58-31 after three quarters.

WCHS will close out December with a road trip to Humboldt on Friday.
