EAGLE GROVE - South Hamilton's pack tightened, as did its stranglehold on the Eagle Grove Invitational Class B team championship here last night.

With their second through fifth runners finishing within 37 seconds of one another, the 11th-ranked (Class 2A) Hawks pushed all of their scorers into the top 20 at the Eagle Grove Golf Course to distance themselves from runner-up and 12th-ranked (1A) Algona Bishop Garrigan.

South Hamilton tallied 58 points and Garrigan put up 71. Mason City Newman (94), Emmetsburg (95) and Eagle Grove (98) rounded out the top five.

"We were really running in a tight pack, especially at the beginning of the race," South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said.

Sophomore leader Kayla Lucas was a bit under the weather dealing with a cold, but it didn't hinder her from placing in the top five. She completed the 4-kilometer course that featured several rolling hills in 16 minutes, 53 seconds to take fifth.

Allyson Ervin (17:36) joined Lucas in the top 10; she was eighth. Megan Fisher (17:49) closed strong to place 11th, and Rachael Huegerich (17:57) strode across in 16th. Kali Lucas (18:13) finished off the triumphant night by taking 18th.

SH boys third

Jacob Heeren again led the South Hamilton boys' cross country team, finishing the 5K course in 17:51, to place sixth overall against a deep field.

The Hawks occupied the third-place slot in the team standings with 76 points. No. 14-ranked (2A) North Iowa had 47 points to sit atop the class, while Bishop Garrigan was second with 69.

"I thought the boys ran together in a pretty good pack, too," Paulsen said. "And that's a really tough course with a lot of hills, but that should be good preparation for when we hit the (ISU) course for conference."

Zach Coster (19:03) and Alex Bristow (19:06) finished just three seconds apart in 14th and 15th, respectively. Caleb Olson (19:21) was 20th, a spot ahead of teammate Jordan Toillion (19:31).

South Hamilton will play host on Thursday at the Jewell Golf and Country Club. The Hawk Invitational is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m.
