A legacy for the county

Open house, ribbon cutting planned for new Briggs Woods Cabin

The Daily Freeman Journal

A ribbon cutting, open house and public tours of the the new Briggs Woods Legacy Cabin will be held this weekend, according to officials.

The cabin will be open for a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour at an open house event scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. It will again be open to the public on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

The construction of the cabin is a groundbreaking effort of many partners, including Hamilton County Conservation Board, Prairie Rivers of Iowa RC&D, Enhance Hamilton County Foundation and many volunteers. Briggs Woods County Park is one of Iowa's oldest parks, and is considered to be a "crown jewel" among Iowa's county parks.

Perched on a hill overlooking Briggs Woods Lake, the Legacy Cabin is located a short distance from Shelter No. 3 at Briggs Woods.

"The Hamilton County Conservation Legacy account was developed years ago for the future management of our natural resources areas and wildlife management. The Legacy Cabin is a significant component of future planning," said Brian Lammers, Hamilton County Conservation director. "It will serve as a model for natural resource utilization, and will provide revenue back into the parks. We are proud to be unveiling the first in a series of county park cabins."

Mike Brandrup manages the Prairie Rivers of Iowa Log Products program, which secured the Iowa native oak logs used in the cabin, and helped oversee the construction process. Brandrup said he is excited about the possibilities opened by the construction of this unit.

"It's gratifying to see this cabin constructed with Iowa oak logs. This is an example of a sustainable and environmentally-friendly building that can stand for at least 100 years," he said.

"This unit sleeps 12 to 15 people in three-bedrooms with an extra sleeping area over the porch," according to Brandrup. "It's completely furnished with a full kitchen and is sited just steps away from Briggs Woods Lake, golf course, a swimming beach, fishing, hiking and bike trails. This is a fantastic cabin."

To get to the cabin, go to Briggs Woods County Park south of Webster City on Iowa Highway 17, enter the park, and follow the signs to the Legacy Cabin.
