True community pride and spirit

June 20, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

When planning for a community event, it's sometime difficult to know what to expect in terms of attendance. The weather, the time of day, the location and so many other things can play a part in determining how many will turn out.

We were truly amazed by the wonderful response to our call for local residents to show up wearing their RAGBRAI?T-shirts for a group photo. An estimated 250 people braved the extremely warm temperatures and humidity at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. They brought their very best smiles and were exceptionally patient while the Daily Freeman-Journal staff arranged the photo and got just the right shot. Some even brought their bicycles along for the photo. Thanks to all who took the time to attend the event.

A?big thank you goes to the local police officers who blocked off traffic so we could safely line up the group in the north alley parking lot. Thanks also to the city line department and two workers who brought in a bucket truck that hoisted our photographer, Troy Banning, into the air to get the shot.

The photograph will be used to welcome our overnight RAGBRAI?guests on July 24. What a true showing of community pride and spirit. The sea of yellow shirts, smiling faces and waving arms should create a warm and heartfelt greeting for the riders.
