Hawk boys win easily; Ullestad medalist

April 11, 2012
The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - South Hamilton's early-season unbeaten streak on the links continued yesterday at the Jewell Golf and Country Club.

Sparked by a medalist round of 36 from Trevor Ullestad in blustery conditions, the Hawks fired a 158 to easily top West Marshall (196) and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter (205) in a triangular meet.

"If you're breaking 160 on a night like (Tuesday), that's a pretty good score," South Hamilton head coach Mark Ullestad said. "I think the days of the nice weather may be over for a while so we've got to adjust and keep going."

Braxton Risetter and Jordan Sogard shared the runner-up honor; both shot 40. Jacob Haugland added a 42.

Garrett Goodwin (47) led West Marshall, and Ryan Kimberly (49) was the low man for CMB.

"I was very happy with how the girls rebounded. They played better and they didn't let the cold and wind bother them as much," South Hamilton head coach Kathi Fisher said after her squad shot a 205 to top West Marshall (211) by six shots.

Brittany Butler was the most consistent player and took top honors with a 43, seven strokes better than teammate Maggie Peters and West Marshall's Blair Bailey, who were the runners-up with matching rounds of 50.

"Brittany was putting well," Fisher said. "Her short game was her Achilles Heel (on Monday), but it came back and helped her (on Tuesday)."
