Hawks finish in middle of pack at home meet

Twedt snags school record in 400-meter low hurdles; boys and girls combine to win 16 medals

The Daily Freeman Journal

JEWELL - Tristin Twedt finally got the record he's been seeking for nearly three years last night at the South Hamilton Co-ed Relays.

The junior ended Adam Swalla's reign atop the school's 400-meter low hurdles record, as Twedt turned in a time of 56.16 seconds to place second. Swalla's previous benchmark was 56.27.

"When Tristin started as a freshman he looked at that record, so it's good to see him get it," South Hamilton boys' coach Darrell Paulsen said. "He's been looking forward to that."

Both South Hamilton teams placed fourth in the field of six teams. The boys claimed seven medals and scored 65 1/3 points, while the girls picked up nine top-three finishes and notched 96 points.

Madrid took home the boys' team title with 144 1/3 points. North Polk (141) was the girls' champion.

Devin Howard was the only gold medalist for the Hawk boys' team. He bested West Marshall's Dalton Ferch at the front of the 100-meter dash field and won in 11.21 seconds.

South Hamilton didn't do itself any favors with disqualifications in the 4x200 and shuttle hurdle relays. Still, Paulsen was pleased with what he saw from his athletes.

"I thought the kid ran really well," he said.

Hawk girls' coach Jim Klein put a concentrated effort on the relays and it paid off with four first- and second-place finishes. The 4x800 (10:52.50) and distance medley (4:46.50) both came up golden.

Meghan Fisher, Allyson Ervin, Kayla Monthei and Eliana Lowry teamed up for the 4x800; Tiffany Jacobson, Ervin and the Fisher sisters, Meghan and Alyson were on the distance medley.

"Right now we've got a nucleus of about eight kids and we used them on the relays," Klein said. "Now we just have to build around them."

Kayla Lucas was strong in the distance events with a gold medal in the 1,500 (5:33.56) and a silver in the 3,000 (12:24.40).

Alyson Fisher (200, 28.04) and Shannon Hoyle (100 hurdles, 17.15) were second as well.

Both South Hamilton teams will travel to Pella on Tuesday to compete in the Pella Christian Relays, which will begin at 5 p.m.
