My AP football ballot for public consumption

September 29, 2013 - Troy Banning
I’ll admit it: I’ve been complaining in recent weeks about some of the questionable choices that Associated Press voters have made in regards to the prep football poll.

I think everyone that votes in the poll should make their ballots public and that’s what I’m going to start doing.

So here you go. A look at my weekly AP poll ballots in each of the six classes.

CLASS 4A 1. West Des Moines Dowling (5-0) 2. Cedar Rapids Xavier (5-0) 3. Pleasant Valley (5-0) 4. Urbandale (4-1) 5. Iowa City West (5-0) 6. Ames (5-0) 7. Southeast Polk (3-2) 8. West Des Moines Valley (3-2) 9. Waukee (4-1) 10. Sioux City East (4-1)

4A NOTES: I’ve got 4-1 Urbandale ahead of several unbeatens, but Urbandale’s lone loss was a nail-biter to Dowling ... Southeast Polk may have two losses, but they’re to Dowling and Ames, and the Rams beat WDM Valley ... Two-loss Valley rocked previously No. 8 Indianola on Friday and has gone down to only Southeast Polk and Dowling.

CLASS 3A 1. Sioux City Heelan (5-0) 2. Pella (5-0) 3. Decorah (5-0) 4. Carroll (4-1) 5. Spencer (5-0) 6. Clear Lake (5-0) 7. Harlan (4-1) 8. Boone (5-0) 9. Washington (4-1) 10. Webster City (5-0)

3A NOTES: Heelan is a solid No. 1 with a win over 4A Sioux City East ... I really like Pella on both sides of the ball ... Carroll’s got a win over Harlan and its only loss is to my 2A No. 1 Carroll Kuemper (7-6) ... Sorry Webster City fans, but I have Boone in front of the Lynx simply because the Toreadors throttled Ballard on Friday ... Washington’s only loss is to Pella in a close affair.

CLASS 2A 1. Carroll Kuemper (5-0) 2. Waukon (5-0) 3. West Marshall (5-0) 4. Mediapolis (5-0) 5. Albia (5-0) 6. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley (4-1) 7. New Hampton (5-0) 8. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (4-1) 9. Cascade (4-1) 10. Spirit Lake (4-1)

2A NOTES: Kuemper, Waukon and West Marshall are a solid 1-2-3, probably on every ballot ... I think BH/RV is better than No. 6, but an early-season loss gives me pause. BH/RV dismantled last week’s No. 3 Spirit Lake 31-8 on Friday ... Cascade got no votes last week, but I’m pledging my support this week after it topped last week’s No. 5 Union 30-21 on Friday ... Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s only loss is to Class A No. 1 West Lyon.

CLASS 1A 1. Iowa City Regina (5-0) 2. Council Bluffs St. Albert (5-0) 3. South Winneshiek (5-0) 4. Wilton (5-0) 5. Dike-New Hartford (5-0) 6. North Fayette (5-0) 7. Mount Ayr (5-0) 8. Fort Dodge St. Edmond (5-0) 9. Van Meter (5-0) 10. North Cedar (5-0)

1A NOTES: This class has been the reason for my public whining. Some voter out there — WHO ARE YOU!? — has been putting South Winneshiek at No. 1. Regina has three straight state championships and a 46-game winning streak. The Regals are No. 1 until they get beat. Period ... St. Edmond made a big jump for me this week after shredding previously unbeaten Ridge View, 62-6, on Friday. Ridge View runs the spread. We all know what St. Edmond runs with legendary coach Dick Tighe. Looks like the old guy still has it.

CLASS A 1. West Lyon (5-0) 2. Wapsie Valley (5-0) 3. BGM Brooklyn (5-0) 4. AHST Avoca (5-0) 5. AGWSR Ackley (6-0) 6. Montezuma (5-0) 7. Pekin (4-1) 8. Gladbrook-Reinbeck (3-2) 9. Lawton-Bronson (4-1) 10. Hinton (3-2)

A NOTES: West Lyon and Wapsie Valley have been consensus top-two teams all season. Don’t see it changing anytime soon ... BGM, Montezuma and Pekin are all in the same district, so we’ll see soon if I know what I’m talking about ... I really wanted to put Gladbrook-Reinbeck up at about No. 6 because I think the Rebels are a state quarterfinalist (at a minimum), but two losses stopped me. Actually, only one of those did — a Week Zero loss to Denver. Yes, Denver is 2-4, but its schedule? Yowza. Denver’s losses are to Hampton-Dumont, Wapsie Valley, North Fayette and South Winneshiek ... G-R also lost to Dike-New Hartford.

CLASS 8-MAN 1. Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira (5-0) 2. Don Bosco (6-0) 3. Newell-Fonda (5-0) 4. West Bend-Mallard (6-0) 5. Adair-Casey (6-0) 6. Springville (6-0) 7. River Valley (5-0) 8. Coon Rapids-Bayard (6-0) 9. Sidney (5-0) 10. MMC Marcus (4-1)

8-MAN NOTES: Honest approach — I have no idea which team is better between Elk Horn-Kimballton/Exira and Don Bosco. It’s only a guess ... I went to Northeast Hamilton head coach John Seiser for his opinion on Newell-Fonda and West Bend-Mallard since his team has already played both. He told me they were equal (thanks so much for the insight, John), so I went with Newell-Fonda based on the Mustangs’ success over the last two years ... Defending champ MMC has been out of the rankings for weeks. Uh, its only loss was a 10-pointer to West Bend-Mallard. Written off too soon, me thinks.

Well, that’s it. Agree with me? Am I an idiot? Probably the latter, but this isn’t easy.
