The Hamilton County Fair is not just for kids

There’s still time to get an entry ready for open class competitions

As we continue to get ready for the Hamilton County Fair at our house, it’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of things. My son is putting the finishing touches on several projects, making sure the work is neat and well labeled. He’s set aside a spa day this weekend for Barney the Dog who definitely needs a bath and a good brushing.

Monday is the day that 4-H clubs will get their first taste of judging – for those who are exhibiting visual arts, food and nutrition, sewing, personal development, photography and other non-livestock entries. It’s really quite a fun experience even if there are a few jitters about talking to the judges.

But you know, the Hamilton County Fair is not just for kids. There are many opportunities for adults to display their handiwork or produce from the garden or a plate of delicious cookies.

I talked to a couple folks who are hoping to see an increase in the number of open class entries this year, especially in light of the Fair’s 100th anniversary. Forty years ago, the open class building was packed with baked goods, canned items, constructed clothing, quilts, afghans, flowers, embroidery, cross-stitch pieces, paintings and so much more. Wouldn’t it be fun to pack the exhibit hall again this year? Bring out Grandma’s cinnamon roll recipe and bake up a pan. How about that quilt you finished this year or a basket filled with garden produce?

With all of the photos you have on your cell phone, there must be one that you’re quite proud to show. Why not print it out and mount it on a mat? You might just earn a blue ribbon at the county fair for it. Of course, a regular camera works, too, if you want to go old school.

There will be two flower shows during the fair so there’s a couple of opportunities to compare your blooms to others from around the county. And there are categories for those who like to get creative with floral arranging.

And if you are whiz in the kitchen, share some of your baked goodness in the products of kitchen division. Here’s a few suggestions to get you started: yeast breads and rolls, muffins, biscuits, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, bars, candy, pies, decorated cakes, popcorn creations, canned produce and meat. There is a junior class for 12 and under, and even a gluten-free baked goods category.

How about those of you who sew? The textiles division has many categories for garment, decorative needlework, pillows, tablecloths, quilts and there’s even a category for team or group quilts.

If you’re interested in entering something, check out the fair book, available to download at www.hamcoexpo.com. Or for more information, call the fair office at 832-1443 or email fairgrnd@wmtel.net.

I’m thinking that my mother-in-laws peanut butter cookie recipe might be a good entry. I’ve got all weekend to practice and to get just the perfect batch. And I don’t think the fellows at my house would mind serving as taste-testers.

See you at the fair!
