“The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green

Fair warning-you may want to bring the tissues along with this one! With a movie adaption just recently released, this title has become extremely popular recently. This book tells the story of Hazel, a teenager with cancer, as she works out her place in the world. Told with humor and grace, readers follow Hazel as she falls in love and deals with the reality of her illness.

“The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas

While this book is long, it is jam-packed with action. Follow the hero, Edmond Dants, as his life is turned upside down when he is wrongfully imprisoned. Edmond does not despair in prison though; he manages to escape and then devises a plan for revenge on those who wronged him. A literary classic, and one of Dumas’ most popular novels, it also has a popular movie adaption to enjoy after finishing the book.

“The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown

If you liked “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand, this is a title you may want to try. “The Boys in the Boat” tells the epic story of the University of Washington’s 1936 rowing team that competed for an Olympic gold medal. Sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers beat out elite east coast rivals for a place on the Olympic team and ultimately went up against the German crew at the Olympic games in Berlin. Using the teams own diaries and journals, this book tells the emotional and personal story of a team that overcame all odds by digging in and working together.

“The Hurricane Sisters” by Dorothea Benton Frank
