Getting in the holiday spirit at KYL

Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching and we at Kendall Young Library are thankful for many things: our great community, our beautiful building, and Kendall Young himself.

We also want to give back to the community, so we are sponsoring a community food drive this month. Now through Nov. 27 we are accepting non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Upper Des Moines Opportunity food pantry. For every item you bring in, $2 will be taken off your fine total (excluding any replacement charges). Help out your community and pay off your fines, all at the same time. Don’t have any fines? That’s great, but you can still feel free to use the library as a drop-off point for food donations.

Of course, Thanksgiving is just the start of the holiday season. We are already planning our December programs, full of holiday spirit.

Come visit our vintage book-themed Christmas tree (along with all of the other beautiful trees and decorations) at the All Culture’s Equal Festival of Trees at The Bridge on Nov. 23 to 24.

Want to learn how to make some of the book ornaments you see showcased on our tree? Come to our Christmas Ornament Adult Upcycling Program on Dec. 3 at 6:30pm. We’ll show you how to make three different ornament designs. As always, we’ll provide all the materials – you just need to show up.

The Children’s Department is busy planning as well. On Saturday, Nov. 23 kids can decorate the tree in the Children’s Department while enjoying the live action movie version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas ” (PG) from 10:30-12:00.

On Dec. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m., kids can visit Santa’s Workshop in the Library Meeting Room where they will make crafts, decorate a treat, and meet Santa. This program is in conjunction with the Chamber’s Winter Wonderland.

And finally, don’t miss “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. This live one-man performance by actor Duffy Hudson is sure to warm your heart and put you in the holiday mood.

Happy Thanksgiving from Kendall Young Library.
