Cold wet springs like the one we had this year give all of us concern about getting the crops in or getting our gardens planted. The cycle of weather is basically a process that is beyond our control (other than impacts that may be associated with “global warming”). In essence we are at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Regardless of the weather, the spring planting of crops, gardens, grass, trees, shrubs or flowers gives the planter a sense of enjoyment and hope for the products that will come when it is time to harvest or enjoy the beauty. Just as the weather changes, the plants begin their growth and change into maturity. We are constantly concerned that the changes occurring will meet our expectations for a great crop or images of beauty.

We are often reluctant or hesitate to accept change in our lives or our surroundings. Yet, the analogy of the crops shows that we can accept and embrace change. Change in our communities is often viewed with reluctance and / or hesitation. We tend to like stability without change. In that context our lives continue with predictability and without surprises. We think that if there isn’t any change, life is positive, but, the fact is, that without change our lives become predictable, pretty bland and without excitement. Without change and innovation, we might still be cooking over a wood fire.

Favorable changes in our community can put excitement and energy in the community as well as supporting the needs of the younger generations. Change by making community improvements tell:

Visitors that you care,

Youth that there are things happening that can be important to them,

Potential business investors that this is a community with a future, and

Citizens that they can build a sense of pride and respect.

The fact is that “change is the only constant item in our lives.”

Most of us are resistant to change. We become comfortable with a “status quo” life style. As my wife says “I want a calm pond with no ripples”. Even though we generally have that attitude, changes still come and are important to our future.

For Iowa’s communities it is important to embrace change. We need to look at our neighborhoods and communities and encourage positive changes that enhance the community and give citizens the enthusiasm and desire to improve where they live. Change may be the only ways to survive and grow.

Change will tend to improve the cultural and the economic vitality or the area. Invest your time and effort in planting the seeds of change that will improve your community and your life.
