Thanks for successful Cub Scout day camp

To the Editor:

Another exhausting, exciting, educational, fun-filled two day HC Cub Scout Day Camp has come to a close. Once more I am so incredibly proud of the people who have stepped up to make this so successful for the over 60 young boys in attendance last Friday and Saturday. First and foremost, Briggs Woods for donating the use of the shelters during these two days. Also, all those people that used vacation days from work, gave of their free time to help prepare materials for the stations, be station leaders or helpers, willingly faced the scorching hot temperatures for two days straight, all to make camp a great experience for the kids.

Special thanks also to the Doolittles for donating all the ice we needed for making ice cream in a bag, and for our multiple coolers, and to Heidi and Kent Schell for being a Godsend and lining up the use of the golf cart to transport ice water coolers and get us from point A to B quickly. So many small things that add up and make such a huge difference.

Sgt. Dallas Wingate of the Boone County Sheriff’s Dept. and his K-9 partner Bandit gave an awesome working demonstration to the kids free of charge. It was very exciting and so informative and the kids loved hearing about how Bandit can detect drugs, chases the bad guys, finds objects by scent and protects his partner. Absolutely wonderful and educational program that is available to any group. Something the kids are sure never to forget.

I think many times we take things like our day camp and our beautiful park for granted, which became evident when I invited a visiting grandma that was quieting sitting in her chair in the shade, to accompany me on the golf cart as I checked on stations, took pixs and delivered cold drinks. She was from Texlin, Texas, and was so incredibly impressed with our park and what a neat experience our day camp gave the kids. We pulled up to the woodworking station and watched as the kids took turns using the five or so power drills that still had batteries left. She enthusiastically asked if she could donate $100 to help purchase a few new cordless drills so the station had more on hand. She saw the kids doing things for the first time by themselves and what a sense of pride it brought them. I enjoyed our visit driving around the camp that day and was truly appreciative of her gesture. God puts people in your lives at different times for different reasons they say. I’m glad she reiterated to me how incredibly blessed we are to have the volunteers, parent base and beautiful facility to host a camp like ours.

Continue to support your local Scouting program Webster City. All is takes is watching these little guys for a few minutes to see why it’s all worthwhile. It shouldn’t take someone from out of state to make us appreciate what we have right here in good ol’ Webster City, Iowa.

Again, thank you to all that helped in any way, shape or form this past month as we prepared for and hosted another successful Hamilton County Cub Scout Day Camp.
