Today is Poppy Day in WC

To the Editor:

Most of you know the story of the Poppy Sales in memory of our veterans. Here’s a quick review:

From the battlefields of World War I, weary soldiers brought home the memory of a barren landscape transformed by wild poppies, red as the blood that had soaked the soil. By that miracle of nature, the spirit of their lost comrades lived on. The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The American Legion Auxiliary poppy has continued to bloom for the casualties of four wars, its petals of paper bound together for veterans by veterans, reminding America each year that the men and women who have served and died for their country deserve to be remembered.

Friday, May 27 is Poppy Sale Day in Webster City. Part of the preparation is to contact former locations to verify set-up times and places. Our local Hy-Vee has refused to allow Poppy Sales at their location this year. The Poppy Committee was told that Hy-Vee doesn’t have room for them.

For those of you who wish to honor our veterans by purchasing a Poppy, you may stop by Bomgaars, Fareway or K-Mart. These local merchants have once again made the Poppy Committee welcome at their store.

Thank you for remembering our veterans and their sacrifices by purchasing a poppy again this year.
