Mirzda Sunins, 104, Webster City

Mirzda Sunins, 104, of Webster City, died, Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Van Diest Medical Center. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center with Pastor Jeff Flagg officiating. Mirzda has been cremated and her ashes as well as those of her husband, Karlis, will be scattered at their favorite respite.

Mirdza (Lelmanis) Sunins was born on August 10, 1912 in Salaspils County, Latvia to Janis and Katerina Leimanis. She was educated in Riga, Latvia and worked as a Home Economics teacher until February 20, 1942 when she married Karlis A. Sunis. Of this union were born two children, Janis and Mara in June of 1942 and August of 1943.

The Sunins family fled Latvia in 1944 to escape the Russian occupation and resided in a displaced persons camp in Fischbach, Germany until 1949. The Sunins family emigrated to the United States and Webster City, Iowa in October 1949 under the sponsorship of the Asbury United Methodist Church and the patronage of George and Mara Aden and Keith and Alma Graham. In the early years of life in Webster City, she was a part time custodian at the Methodist Church and raised her children. Until her retirement, she worked at Hahne Printing Company for 33 years as a typesetter. In her retirement, she cared for her husband of more than 63 years until his death in 2004.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Janis and Katerina, her husband, Karlis, her son, Janis (John), her sister, Austra, and her brother, Valdis. She is survived by her daughter, Mara (Sunins) Swanson, her granddaughter, Michelle Mirdza Sunins and her mother, Sherry Newton; and her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Sunins.
