VDMC implements additional visitor screenings

Van Diest Medical Center is now conducting an additional level of screening at each entry point of our hospital and clinics for all visitors and staff effective today. The screening protocol for everyone entering our facilities will include documentation of name, body temperature, contact information, travel history and reason for visit.

If an individual has respiratory symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose) and their visit is essential, they will be masked immediately.

If an individual has respiratory symptoms (fever, cough, runny nose) and their visit is non-essential, they will be asked to leave and return once their symptoms have resolved.

Upon completion of the screening, each visitor or patient will be given a ‘VISITOR’ sticker to wear during their visit to validate screening.

As a reminder, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following best practices to help prevent the spread of all viruses:

• Stay home if you are sick

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick

• Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze

• Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing

• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

• Disinfect surfaces and objects using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe

Additionally, wearing a mask is not advised by the CDC for people who are well for protection against respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19.

If individuals are concerned they have been exposed to COVID-19, VDMC officials said people should contact their health care provider who will assess symptoms and ask about recent travel history. Call your health care provider before going in.

Officials at Van Diest Medical Center said the facility is following guidance and recommendations provided by the CDC and Iowa Department of Public Health. If a person is found to have symptoms and travel history, Van Diest Medical Center colleagues will isolate the patient and alert the Iowa Department of Public Health to coordinate testing.

Anyone with general questions about COVID-19 are directed to please dial 2-1-1. For the latest CDC guidelines, visit www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/.
