Know the rules for fireworks and the hours they can be discharged

With July 4th just around the corner, many area residents are looking forward to celebrations and fireworks displays. For those wishing to fire off fireworks on their own, there are a few restrictions that apply to those within the city limits of Webster City.

According to the city ordinance concerning fireworks, sec. 22-66, states that fireworks can only be discharged from 10 a.m. July 4 through 12 a.m. July 5. It is unlawful to discharge fireworks at any other time than those specified in the ordinance.

In addition, those using consumer fireworks must be at least 18 years old and the fireworks must be used on their own property or property where they have obtained consent. The ordinance also states that no person shall discharge consumer fireworks if he or she is showing visible signs of or is determined to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, narcotics or alcohol.

The ordinance also prohibits altering, removing or discharging components of fireworks other than in its intended method of discharging.

Fireworks should not be set off in a manner that is reckless or likely to cause injury, fire, property damage or death, according to the ordinance.

Sky lanterns and similar open-flame devices are prohibited within the city limits.

More information on the fireworks ordinances are available on the city website. Type “fireworks” into the search window.

Unincorporated areas

For those living in the unincorporated areas of Hamilton County, Iowa Code Section 727.2 applies. Fireworks may be legally set off from July 1 to July 8 and Dec. 10 to Jan. 3 of each year, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., with extended hours on the holidays — 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Those living in Hamilton County towns should contact their city hall about ordinances.
