American Legion, Auxiliary conduct Memorial Day observance at Jefferson Gym
A large crowd gathered at Jefferson Gym at the Webster City Middle School Monday morning to honor those who gave their lives in service to their country.
A Memorial Day observance, originally scheduled for the Boulevard of Valor and Graceland Cemetery, was moved to the Middle School because of the early morning showers and blustery winds. Observances were also scheduled for the Marshall Crippen Bridge to honor those lost at sea and at Cass Center Cemetery northeast of Webster City.
The Webster City High School band, under the direction of Rachel Daum, performed a medley of military anthems.
American Legion Post 191 Commander Rich Stroner welcomed those in attendance. He also served as the speaker during the observance. Legion Chaplain Bruce Johnston offered the invocation.
American Legion Auxiliary member Jenny Maass read the names of those from Hamilton County currently serving in active duty. Auxiliary member Pat Nokes followed by reading the names of the veterans from Hamilton County who had died in the past year. As each name was read, Legion member Steve Struchen sounded a bell in the veterans honor.
The observance concluded with a rifle salute by the Honor Guard, followed by “Taps.”
