Observances planned for Memorial Day

Events scheduled Monday for several Hamilton County communities

Memorial Day observances will be held in several Hamilton County communities on Monday as area residents gather to honor those who lost their lives in military service to the United States.

Webster City

A series of observances will be held in Webster City. American Legion and Auxiliary members will meet at 8:15 a.m. at the Legion Hall for transportation to the various locations.

At 8:45 a.m., services will be held at the Marshall Crippen bridge on North Des Moines St. That service will honor those lost at sea. The service will be conducted by the Post 191 Auxiliary.

Then, the Legion will move on to the Cass Center Cemetery for a 9:15 a.m. service conducted by Post 191.

The group will then meet at 10:10 in the 700 block North Alley to assemble for a parade to Graceland Cemetery. The parade will move south on Des Moines Street, stopping at the Boulevard of Valor for a presentation of the roses at the markers. A recognition of the active duty military personnel will be made at that time as well, read by the Legion Auxiliary.

The parade will then continue south along Des Moines Street to Ohio, and then to the entrance of Graceland Cemetery and the Memorial Stage. The Graceland service will begin at 11 a.m. and will be conducted by Commander Richard Stroner. Stroner will also be the speaker for the event.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to Jefferson Gym at 10:30 a.m.

Ellsworth

Memorial Day services will be held at Homewood Cemetery, 3150 Ubben Avenue, Ellsworth.

The South Hamilton High School band will perform at 10:55 a.m., with the program to begin at 11 a.m.

The Rev. Margaret Aiseayew will present the invocation, followed by the National Anthem, performed by the high school band, choir and the audience. Rev. Aiseayew will present the memorial meditation and the color guard will offer a salute to the deceased veterans. Clay Willadsen and Kaden Angove will play taps at the conclusion of the service.

Short services will also be held at Greenwood Cemetery, 3411 Xircus Avenue at 9 a.m.; and Mamreland Cemetery, 3769 Wilson, at 9:45 a.m.

Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs, as folding chairs will not be provided at the cemetery.

In case of inclement weather, all services will be held at the Ellsworth Community Center at 11 a.m.

Stratford

A memorial service will be held at the Stratford School gym on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. Following the observance, a meal will be provided by the Stratford Lions Club. A free will offering will be taken.

Williams/Blairsburg

The American Legion Post 633 will hold Memorial Day services on Monday, May 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Williams City Park under the direction of Commander Derrick Greenfield.

The ceremony will include a prayer and a salute by the Honor Guard.

Services will continue at the Williams cemeteries at approximately 9:50 a.m.

The Blairsburg American Legion will conduct Memorial Day services beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Blairsburg cemetery.
