Perry selected to create sculpture
Artist will design permanent art piece for Webster City
Arts R Alive in Webster City, Iowa has chosen Dan Perry to design and construct a permanent sculpture for Webster City. Perry is a Studio Technician/Instructor and Co-Supervisor of the Public Art Incubator, University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.
Forty-five entries were considered for the project. Perry’s previous work with public art, examples of his creations, and accompanying story were key factors in the jury’s choice.
“I am very interested in this opportunity to contribute my work to the burgeoning arts and culture of Webster City. My family has history in the region, which has influenced my work as an artist as I draw from my experiences and travels in the area,” Perry said. “I would be honored to create an artwork that tells the story of Webster City; it’s past history and present, while alluding to its bright future.
“My work draws from architectural and natural elements surrounding a site to complement the space and engage viewers. I combine recognizable elements with abstract forms to create dynamic artworks that energize a space. I strive to create artworks that are “readable” to the public yet offer enough visual and conceptual complexity to engage viewers over time,” Perry said. “My goal is to create an artwork that becomes a unique landmark for Webster City and engage the community for years to come.”
The next step in the process will involve the Arts R Alive committee working with Dan Perry to design the sculpture in preparation for installment in the fall.
The permanent sculpture project was made possible with grants from the Webster City Hotel Motel Tax Committee, the Enhance Hamilton County Foundation and funds from the Arts R Alive committee.
