KYL to screen ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor’

Documentary explores the life of Fred Rogers and his iconic children’s program

A documentary released to select theaters this past June called “Won’t you be my neighbor?” will be airing at the Kendall Young Library on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 6 pm as part of their Movie for Adults program this month. Popcorn and beverages will be provided. The run time for the movie is 95 minutes.

The documentary explores the life of Fred Rogers, who was known for his popular children’s program “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” that aired on the Public Broadcasting Service or PBS for 31 seasons with Rogers as the host, puppeteer, and music composer. The documentary explores his time on the show, the different social issues that arose during his three decades on air, and the overall impact he left behind for the kids that watched his show everyday.

Viewers will also find out a little more about the man behind the red sweater as well. The film offers a nostalgic look at one of the most famous television icons of their generation. The film also depicts some of the groundbreaking steps taken against social injustices happening in that era through the lens of a children’s show.

“Everyone grew up watching Mr. Rogers, so it’s just a good movie to reminisce about your childhood,” said KYL Director, Ketta Lubberstedt-Arjes.

The Kendall Young Library is able to provide special showings like this through Movie Licensing U.S.A., who license and distribute content to non-theatrical markets.
