One dead following motorcycle accident

Blown rear tire blamed for crash

An Ottumwa woman has died as result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night on Interstate 35 in Hamilton County.

The 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by Todd A. Burnstedt, 52, of Ottumwa, was traveling southbound near the 128 mile marker when the rear tire blew. According to reports by the Iowa State Patrol, the cycle went sideways and down on its right side, throwing the driver and his passenger, Debra Lynn Burnstedt, 55, of Ottumwa onto the roadway.

Debra Burnstedt was transported by air ambulance to Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines with severe head injuries. She died Wednesday as a result of those injuries, according to reports.

Todd Burnstedt was transported by ambulance to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. He was treated and released.
